HP Archive Backup System for OpenVMS, Version 4.5

HP is very pleased to announce the availability of the HP Archive Backup System (ABS) for OpenVMS, Version 4.5, on both the Integrity servers and the AlphaServer systems. With this release of ABS V4.5, we bring to you its latest feature, Software Encryption with Key Management.

ABS now supports both Software and Hardware Encryption. The Software Encryption feature is an extension of the encryption facility (using AES and DES cryptographic algorithms) already available in the OpenVMS Version 8.3 Backup Utility. In addition, both Manual and Automatic Key Management for software encryption will be provided.

ABS supports hardware drive-level encryption by supporting the LTO4 drives that belong to both the Enterprise Class and Business Class tape libraries, but they MUST be used in association with the corresponding key management device (SKM or MSL LTO-4 Encryption kit). ABS supports an LTO4 drive in an EML/ESL library (hardware encryption) and also the Secure Key Manager (SKM) which performs the key management for these enterprise class libraries. ABS V4.5 also has been qualified with the latest MSL LTO-4 encryption kit that provides key management functionality for LTO-4 drives in an MSL G3 library (business class libraries).

Stromasys SA, Geneva and its Subsidiary Stromasys Asia Pacific, Hong Kong expands its APAC Operations

Stromasys S A, a Geneva, Switzerland based software company specializing in Cross Platform Virtualization solutions, today announced their entry into the Indian Market with the appointment of its Chief Representative for their India Operations as part of its Subsidiary, Stromasys Asia Pacific Ltd. It will serve as a foothold for Stromasys SA’s sales and operations in the fast-growing Asia Pacific market, targeting enterprises that are running VAX and Alpha systems. These hardware systems were developed in the 1980’s, and had unprecedented performance, as well as an advance operating system, OpenVMS, that is far superior to today’s operating systems.

“The market for Cross-Platform Virtualization solutions in the Asia-Pacific region is experiencing phenomenal growth,  said Dr. Robert Boers, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Stromasys SA. “Having a more direct country specific presence in the region will allow us to serve customers better and achieve further business growth. Our leading-edge solutions give our clients a seamless binary-migration from aging VAX or Alpha hardware platforms to newer, faster and more energy efficient industry standard servers, while preserving the client’s legacy application investments across hardware generation; all this, without major changes or costly software migration and delay to the client’s business productivity , he added.

Venkat Sundaram will be responsible for managing the overall business and operations in India. He joins Stromasys with over 30 years of IT industry experience and a successful track record in Sales, Customer Services, Networks, Software and IT Infrastructure Program Management in India, USA and Malaysia.

“The appointment of Country-specific representatives in the Asia-Pacific Region, with only 5% of End -of-Life VAX and Alpha systems’ users in this region having adopted the solution, we believe there is plenty of potential for Stromasys to grow. We will exploit the technical expertise of the total region to consolidate our growth , said Tony Leung, President of the APAC Region.

On the occasion Venkat Sundaram said “Cross Platform Virtualization solutions have ample market potential since there are many companies, Government of India Agencies, Public Sectors throughout India still running mission critical applications on older VAX and Alpha Systems where the underlying hardware is now End-of-Life (EOL) and simply needs to be replaced

He further added “With our unique solutions, these companies can now alleviate the problems of hardware obsolescence and greatly reduce their service, maintenance and operational cost of these aging systems, while directly benefiting from the performance gains of newer and faster processors, memory, storage servers and networks that come automatically with the new industry standards platforms .

Virtual VAX & Alpha Emulator Development
Progress Report: VL Milestone
March 3, 2009

Migration Specialties is pleased to announce we have reached a key project milestone ahead of schedule. We have completed development of the emulator environment Virtualization Layer, or VL.

The VL supports everything not directly related to the bits, bytes and registers of the emulated hardware. The VL achieves this in a number of ways:

· Hiding the differing characteristics of host operating systems and hardware platforms from the rest of the emulator. This allows the same code to run on OpenVMS and Windows without having to bother about different ways to do threading or hardware access.

· Integrating emulator components that deal with user or host machine interaction. For example, VL communications ports provide the ability to communicate through a telnet session or a physical serial port. This way, this functionality can be shared by any emulated communications port without requiring additional effort, simplifying the emulation environment and providing a more consistent user experience.

· Providing a flexible network infrastructure for emulated network cards.

· Integrating a sophisticated control program that allows a single instance of the emulator to support multiple virtual machines. These machines can be of the same or differing types.

· Providing an extremely flexible method to define hardware configurations in a hierarchical manner, allowing every hardware component to be fully configurable.

Development is now focused on a core Alpha processor that will allow us to generate different emulated Alpha processors (e.g. EV4, EV5) to support different Alpha platforms.
