INTRODUCTION

My request for feedback in the previous edition of this newsletter resulted in messages from seven people, which is better than before but still not good enough.

I changed from all upper case titles to mixed case - did you notice? What do the rest of you think of the newsletter? Should I stick with plain text or move to something prettier?

I'm always interested in more OpenVMS news and your feedback.

EISNER - email service

As many of you know, Eisner.Encompasserve.Org has been down for some time now, and it's not clear when the

system, with its notes conferences, etc., will be resurrected.

As a stop-gap measure, to help folk who utilize Eisner email addresses, Bob Tinkelman has configured some mail

servers to provide a mail forwarding facility. There isn't any automated sign-on procedure. If you had a

working Eisner email address and would like to receive any future email sent to that address, send a request Bob

Tinkelman (bob at tink dot com)

Include

* your Eisner username

* the email address to which you want mail forwarded,

* whether you'd like to opt-out from PMAS anti-spam processing, and lastly

* if you want to utilize the PMAS web interface on

the fwd.com systems. More details on PMAS processing: The default is opt-in for PMAS processing, with all mail

either accepted or quarantined. (None is automatically deleted.)

Unless you opt-out of PMAS processing, you will have the option to manage your PMAS config, examine and release

quarantined messages, etc.

With forwading to some target domains (e.g., yahoo.com) you can authenticate using your alias email

address(username@decuserve.org) and the password associated with your pop/imap account on the target

system. With forwarding to other domains (e.g., gmail.com) this doesn't work, and you will need to ask bob to manually

associated a password with your email address on the fwd.com systems. (Either via email or via phone, depending

on how secure you feel.) If you specify that you want to use the PMAS web interface, you will receive email back from Bob letting

you know if a manually-maintained password will be required. More details on DNS and system names:

We believe that things are configured for all the various domains that were, as far as email is concerned, aliases

for each other. These include: decuserve.decus.org

decuserve.org

encompasserve.com

encompasserve.org

eisner.decus.org

eisner.decuserve.org

eisner.encompasserve.com

eisner.encompasserve.org

For each, DNS contains a primary MXer (mail0.fwd.com) and two secondary MXers (mail1 and mail2.fwd.com).

All run PMDF and PMAS (as a PMDF channel). If you don't respond:

PMDF on the mail*.fwd.com systems is currently configured  to issue temporary rejections, in the smtp dialog, for any

Eisner destinations for which it doesn't have forwarding

info.

The OpenVMS Consultant: OpenVMS DEBUG: Often underutilized and unappreciated

The OpenVMS Consultant returns from a hiatus with a multi-pronged series of columns on different aspects of

OpenVMS. The first of these articles is an introductory article on OpenVMS DEBUG.

We are a diverse group. Some IT professionals spend all of their time developing software. Others never even see the

text of a source program, other than a scripting language such as DCL or PERL, outside of a textbook. Still others

are strictly involved in operations and have no interest in programming matters of any stripe.

Going forward, there will be several ongoing threads in this column. One thread will emphasize issues of interest

to developers. Another ongoing thread will be topics of interest to those who write DCL and other scripts on

OpenVMS. Management and operations issues will be a third thread. In addition to these three ongoing threads, other

topics will make appearances.

This column is the first in a series of columns about the capabilities and use of the OpenVMS debugger, DEBUG. The

OpenVMS Documentation set includes an extensive treatment of DEBUG in the "HP OpenVMS Debugger Manual". The manual

is available on the OpenVMS www site in both HTML and PDF versions. DEBUG is one of the fundamental software development tools

on OpenVMS. At its most elemental, DEBUG allows a programmer to interrupt program execution at pre-selected

points in the source program, display and possibly alter variables, and continue execution.

Even this extremely limited use of DEBUG is a quantum leap from inserting and removing "print" statements for

debugging. The ability to set breakpoints and examine storage is an elemental aspect of debugging that far

predates the VAX.

It is simple use DEBUG on a program. The basic steps are the same for all of the OpenVMS processors:

* compile with the /DEBUG and /NOOPTIMIZE qualifiers

(DEBUG can be used with optimized code, but it is more, sometimes very much more, difficult to correlate source

code to executable code if /NOOPTIMIZE is omitted)

* link the executable image using the /DEBUG qualifier

* execute the program using the RUN command When the program image is activated, control is first

given to DEBUG, which then invokes the actual user image. In its simplest form, the DEBUG can be instructed to

merely run the program, using the GO command. When the program finishes execution, control will be returned to

DEBUG and the user will receive a DBG> prompt (This process can be automated, which will be the subject of a

future column). There are at least four different ways in which User-mode DEBUG can be used by a developer. The most basic use of

DEBUG is the original line-by-line mode essentially unchanged from the original release of VAX/VMS in 1977.

DEBUG has not been static since that time. The intervening three decades have seen the addition of
full-screen mode

(Chapter 7), DECwindows support (Part III, Chapter 8, et seq.), and PC client support (Part IV, Chapter 11). While

the mechanics differ slightly, the underlying strengths of OpenVMS DEBUG remains unchanged.

It is worthwhile to start with an extremely basic example of using DEBUG. To ensure that all can make use of the

example with a vanilla version of base OpenVMS, this column will use MACRO-32 for examples. MACRO-32 is

symbolic version of the native VAX instruction set. On VAX processors, MACRO-32 is a classic macro assembler. On

Alpha and Itanium processors, MACRO-32 is a compiled by rchitecture-specific compilers (AMACRO for Alpha; IMACRO

for Itanium) into equivalent programs. While today’s usage of MACRO-32 is limited, it does have the advantage that

the needed assembler/compiler is part of the base OpenVMS distribution, so every OpenVMS system can be used to work

with these examples. (versions of analogous sample programs in other popular languages are available):

.ENTRY TEST,^M>R2>

MOVZBL #157,STATUS ;Set the value of STATUS to

157

MOVZBL #SS$_NORMAL,R0 ;Set "Success" return code.

RET ;Return to caller.

.PSECT DATA,WRT,NOSHR

STATUS: .BLKL 1 ;One Longword (32 bit) storage location.

.END TEST

This source program needs to be assembled (compiled on Alpha or Itanium). The DCL command is the same in all

cases: $ MACRO/DEBUG [/NOOPTIMIZE] TEST (on Alpha/Itanium, add the /NOOPTIMIZE). Next, the object file must be

converted into an executable image using the OpenVMS LINKER. The DCL command to do this is: $ LINK/DEBUG TEST.

Using the DCL command: $ RUN TEST will now automatically start the program with DEBUG activated.

At the DBG> prompt, enter SET BREAK %LINE 2, then ENTER, then SET BREAK %LINE 3" and ENTER. DEBUG will gain control

before the first line of executable code (on VAX, this will be line 10, the first MOVZBL instruction; on

ALPHA/ITANIUM, the first actual executable instruction is the generated preamble, so the first executable

instruction will appear to be associated with the .ENTRY statement). To actually start the program, enter STEP.

After entering STEP, DEBUG should receive control before the first executable line of the program (line 10; MOVZBL

#157,STATUS). Note that since the object file is MACRO-32, the case of the symbol name is not significant, as it

would be in C/C++ and related languages. Enter the command EXAMINE STATUS to display the current value stored in

STATUS. It should be 0 (on OpenVMS, non-initialized storage is initially set to zero for security reasons).

Then enter the STEP command to execute one source statement. DEBUG will come back with break at %line 11.

Now enter the EXAMINE/DECIMAL STATUS command again. The value will now be 157 (in decimal, since we specified

/DECIMAL on the EXAMINE command.

Now type GO, and the program will complete, returning to the DBG> prompt. CTRL-Z will now return control to DCL. A

log file of this entire dialogue is included in the example archives, as is a DCL command file that performs

the entire example. In future columns of this thread, we will further explore more involved examples of how DEBUG

can be used to advantage. Reader questions about using DEBUG, or other questions

relating to OpenVMS should be addressed to the OpenVMSConsultant (at) OpenVMS.org. While I cannot promise

to answer all messages, I will try to respond as time allows. The OpenVMS Consultant welcomes questions from

readers about OpenVMS and related technologies. Please submit your questions to the OpenVMS Consultant.

Scaling your Oracle environment with Maklee Engineering When migrating from one platform to another scaling is

always a concern. Everyone aspires to have the system perform under peak load as well as it does when only few

users are connected. Tuning an Oracle environment to perform well under peak load or adapt to a sudden change in the workload (stock

market collapsing for example) can be challenging, not all sites are capable of generating extreme production load in

a test environment.

This is where Maklee comes into play....Maklee engineering provides a unique service for Oracle environments -

scaling investigation. Maklee's investigation assists in

determining how well the system could scale and make sure

that SLAs are being met under extreme load. Maklee's

scaling service assists customers in answering four main

questions:

1 . How many users can I add to the system without

impacting the response time of the database?

2 . If my data base is expected to grow 3 times, what

would be the expected impact on performance?

3 . Is my database (and O/S) currently configured to

provide optimum performance/throughput?

4. What would be the optimal hardware platform for my

workload?

Maklee uses advanced tools for monitoring the existing

Oracle environment and detect bottlenecks in the database

preventing scaling.

Typical scaling investigation requires 2-3 days. Here is a

30,000 feet overview of the process:

* Discuss scaling & SLA requirements.

* Review the production Oracle environment.

* Analysis of current situation highlighting

bottlenecks preventing scaling (hardware & software)

* Performance tuning eliminating bottlenecks.

* Presenting recommendations.

Maklee's scaling investigation is offered on the following

platforms: HP-UX, Linux, Tru64, OpenVMS, Sun Solaris, IBM

AIX and Windows.

To find out more about Maklee's capabilities please

HP ABS for OpenVMS V4.5

HP have announced the availability of the HP Archive

Backup System (ABS) for OpenVMS, Version 4.5, on both the

Integrity Servers and the AlphaServer systems. With this

release of ABS V4.5, we bring to you its latest feature,

Software Encryption with Key Management.

This feature is an extension of the Encryption feature

available already in the OpenVMS Version 8.3 Backup

Utility. In addition, both Manual and Automatic Key

Management for encryption will be provided. Manual Key

Management requires the Storage Administrator to keep

track of the keys used for data encryption manually. This

is risky since the data cannot be retrieved if the key is

forgotten. Automatic key management, available in ABS

Version 4.5, involves key generation during data

encryption and automatic key retrieval during data

restore.

ABS now supports both Hardware and Software Encryption.

ABS supports an LTO4 drive in an EML/ESL library (hardware

encryption). The Secure Key Manager (SKM), which is also

qualified on ABS, performs the key management

functionalities. ABS, as mentioned before, also provides

software encryption by encrypting the VMS data files using

AES or DES algorithms.

The ABS V4.5, on both the Integrity and Alpha platforms,

are already available for download from

http://www.hp.com/software/SPL to our support customers

ahead of its physical delivery.

Veritas NetBackup 6.5.2a OpenVMS client release update

The Veritas NetBackup 6.5.2a OpenVMS client release update

is now available for HP Itanium (IA64), Alpha and VAX

systems.

This release contains the following new features, changes

and enhancements:-

1. Support for all 6.5 master and media servers.

2. On a server initiated alternate path restore both the

"from" and "to" paths must be specified as UNIX file

specifications. UNIX file specifications that end with the

slash character are considered by the VMS client to be

directory specifications. If the "from" path is a

directory (it ends with the slash character) and the "to"

path is not a directory (it does not end with the slash

character) then the "to" path is made to be a directory by

appending a trailing slash character. This ensures that on

an alternate path restore, a directory of files are

restored to another directory.

3. Improved date and time conversions between OpenVMS and

UNIX systems.

4. Support for the restoration of very large files

(greater than 512 GB) to the following fibre attached

storage arrays; "HP StorageWorks EVA 4000, 6000, 8000 -

Enterprise Virtual Array" and the "HP StorageWorks 1000

Modular Smart Array".

5. Regression error correction - correct support for the:-

/EXCLUDE=(file-spec,...)

exclude syntax. Including support for the exclusion of

just file extentions such as (*.obj,*.lis,*.log,...) etc.

6. The following exclude file-spec syntax is depreciated:-

/EXCLUDE=exclude-file-list.lis

and should be specified as an indirect @file-spec:-

/EXCLU...@exclude-file-list.lis

with the leading '@' indirect file-spec character. See the

"The Backup /EXCLUDE qualifier" section of the NetBackup

User's Guide for OpenVMS.

7. Both the backup and exclude file lists now support

local process and group level logical names.

8. Support for the NBU restore command:-

RESTORE

wild-card-fspec/ID=backup-id/SELECT=(file-spec,...)

/SELECT=(file-spec,...) syntax. Select one or more file

specifications for restore from within the wild-card-fspec

portion of a backup.

9. Support for Swedish character set file names.

10. Support for the double circumflex (^^) ODS-5 character

file name sequence.

11. Improved backup performance when processing very large

directories
