2.0 From Engineering

2.1 The Availability Manager team is pleased to announce Availability Manager V3.0-2.  This version implements by far the most popular request - collection of data over an IP network.  This is done by introducing the Data Server, which tunnels the AMDS protocol through a secure IP socket to the Data Analyzer.  This method allows for the most backward compatibility with older versions of the Availability Manager and DECamds.

There are some other enhancements as well:
* Ability to install the Data Analyzer/Server kit off the system disk.  This ability was added since Java 5.0 on OpenVMS requires installation on an ODS-5 disk.
* Ability to force a disk volume out of a Mount Verify state.
* Ability to force a shadow set member of a crashed node out of the shadow set.
* Collect data from Logical Disks.
* Event log now shows when an event was cancelled so that the time interval of when the event was valid can be determined.
* COM Qs column in the System Overview window has been revised.  The more common process states (COM and PFW) are now in a separate column, and the remaining states (MWAIT, COLPG, FPW and COMO) reside in the COM Qs column.  If the value in the CPU Qs column is non-zero, then the display shows the total number of processes in each state.  The events for the six states formerly in the CPU Qs column have been revised as well.
* A number of tooltips in the System Overview have been added or modified, including the tooltip for the MEM column that shows alignment faults on the system.  A new event signals a high alignment fault rate.

The Availability Manager team recommends reading the Release Notes and the OpenVMS sections of the Installation Guide for changes in the OpenVMS kit names and contents, and Chapters 1 and 2 of the User's Guide to see how the Data Server works with the Data Analyzer and how to configure the two to transport AMDS packets over an IP network.

The Availability Manager team also wants to thank the people participating in the field test.  Their dedicated help has made this version more feature complete and stable.

3.1 Kind of cool thanks Barry
I figured I'd mention that SIMH can run on the iPhone, with the 2.0 version of the OS.. I've built exe's using the native port of GCC..
It's not terribly fast, but it's cool to have a hand held 11/780!  The only drawback I've seen is speed... and that the O2 option for gcc breaks SIMH..  But being all unofficial software, it's an interesting start.

While libpcap is unavailable, my updates for either SLiRP or HECNet support ought to allow the iPhone to 'reach out' into the world... I'm using the SLiRP stuff now..

3.2 The National Museum of Computing in Bletchley, UK, have a series of OpenVMS seminars coming up; some folk here may well be interested in attending. Details at:

 http://tnmoc.org/36/section.aspx/78

Here is a note from Colin

With the help of other people (notably Ian Miller and others) who've generously provided their time and some companies that have generously donated surplus hardware (AlphaServer 4100, CPUs, memory, HSG80 storage array etc.) we're putting together some current OpenVMS systems at The National Museum of Computing, located in the world's first purpose-built data centre at Bletchley Park in the UK. The building (Block H) was built to house the Colossus machines used for code breaking during WW2.

One of the intentions is to have the main system act as a non-commercially-sponsored mirror for the freeware archives, SIG tape archives and so on. For some time it's been hosting instances of SIMH for people to access over the Internet so that they can use and learn about older systems that would otherwise be difficult to demonstrate (thanks to Bob Supnik and the SIMH contributors). You can donate towards the running costs of TNMoC or buy one of their T-shirts at their web site if you wish to.

As part of explaining the new OpenVMS systems to the volunteers at TNMoC, we thought it would be helpful to make the sessions open to whoever wants to come along and learn more about OpenVMS and how to set up a system. These will be practical sessions with live demos, boot camp style. We'll also have time to look around TNMoC and talk with some of the people involved with it. It's an interesting and important place to visit.

The first session is on 15th May and will cover installing and setting up current versions of OpenVMS from scratch on VAX, Alpha and Integrity, with live demos of all three, including having the Alpha and Integrity machines boot from SAN.

The second session is on 22nd May and will cover installing and setting up the CSWS web server and the SIMH emulator. Camiel Vanderhoeven's also coming across to talk about building and setting up SIMH.

Do come along if you're interested and please sign up at the TNMoC web site (www.tnmoc.org.uk) first so that we have some idea of the numbers

3.3 Great Win for Stromasys and the US department of Education

U.S. Department of Education Purchases VAXscan for Integrity The U.S. Department of Education purchased Stromasys' VAXscan software for their HP Integrity system this week to help fulfill President Obama's promise to "transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age." The Department of Education will use VAXscan for Integrity to help manage systems used in the federal student aid process.
VAXscan is a high-level programming language designed for text processing applications on VAX/VMS, and is a direct port of VAXscan/VMS to OpenVMS on Alpha or Integrity. VAXscan supports commonplace string operators such as concatenation, substring, extraction, and comparison, and has powerful constructs for matching complex text patterns and sorting. These capabilities make VAXscan particularly useful for building filters, translators, extractors, preprocessors, and parsers. As a high-level language, VAXSCAN makes it easy to write short programs to produce tools for special-purpose applications. VAXSCAN programs are readable and easy to comprehend, easing software maintenance.
VAXscan for Alpha or Integrity extends the life of VAXscan applications and the skills of VAXscan developers by making this useful language available on reliable, secure HP OpenVMS AlphaServer and Integrity systems. As an added benefit, AlphaServer and Integrity systems execute VAXscan applications at performance levels that were never possible on VAX systems. Leading Midwestern Retailer Migrates Synergy/DE-based ERP from Version 6 to Version 9 on OpenVMS Integrity in Just 2 Months

With over 34 retail locations across the Midwestern United States, Blain Supply uses a Synergy/DE-based merchandising system to handle inventory management, order processing, and financials. Late last year they began looking for a cost-effective way to refresh and provide longevity to this 15-year-old ERP system without having to replace it completely. "The core business logic built into the application still fit our needs perfectly, but the hardware it ran on and development methods it required were clearly outclassed by current technology," states Jeff Beaster, Director of MIS at Blain Supply. "We were really happy with our existing application but wanted to take advantage of new technologies such as OO programming, SQL integration, and support for current hardware platforms without having to replace the application and adapt our organization to a new solution."

5.5 JAMS and VMware
JAMS has helped a number of organizations increase the operational efficiency of their VMware environments.  If servers are being taxed to the point where applications are slowing down, a JAMS job can shut down a virtual machine on one physical server and start up the same virtual machine on a second server. As a result, organizations automatically shift computing resource allocations by moving virtual machines in response to the workload.  JAMS also submits notification jobs, advising you to take action based upon real job backlogs or anticipated issues based upon the time of day.

VMware users are relying on JAMS to assist with production changes during off-hours since most of organizations are opposed to making production changes during normal working hours.  Using JAMS, virtual machine moves are easily scheduled and executed during the off-hours with the peace of mind that alerts will trigger if any problems arise.

As more and more virtual servers are added, JAMS can be set up to automatically add these new virtual servers to existing queues in JAMS.  As a result, your infrastructure operates at peak levels as JAMS continues to distribute the workload amongst your growing VMware environment.

For more information on JAMS for VMware, please email us for a webex demo.

Stromasys SA Announces Technological Breakthrough in Hardware Virtualization:
New Enterprise-Class Alpha Products

____________________________________

7.2

Geneva, May 15, 2009

Stromasys SA announces the successful development of the first virtual hardware platform for DEC's enterprise-class Alpha systems whose performance is able to meet or exceed that of the original hardware. A breakthrough in design architecture four years in the making, this innovative new virtualization technology provides an answer for owners of enterprise-class Alpha systems who wish to rid themselves of legacy hardware while maintaining the functionality of their current system. Using Stromasys' proprietary virtualization software eliminates the need for expensive migrations, rewriting of applications, or application source code.
Stromasys is a pioneer in the field of "cross-platform virtualization," a technology that allows applications created for one CPU and operating system to run on different hardware platforms, without modification. Stromasys has replaced thousands of legacy PDP-11, VAX, and Alpha systems with CHARON software running on modern equipment over the years, while customers keep their original programs running unmodified, with the exception of faster performance. However, enterprise-class Alpha systems are of a more recent design and perform at very fast speeds, and virtualization technologies were not capable of performing at the speed of the original hardware until the development of this revolutionary new technology by Stromasys. The new enterprise-class Alpha products extend Stromasys' offerings to cover the entire Alpha family, and the addition completes their line of products that provide virtualization for all hardware models manufactured by DEC, from the PDP to the VAX and Alpha.
Replacing legacy hardware with virtualization software running on modern equipment provides numerous benefits. Using CHARON dramatically reduces computer footprint, and provides incredible savings in maintenance costs, energy consumption, and cooling costs. Because the original operating system, software, and applications continue to run unchanged, no re-training or re-staffing is necessary. The technology also allows for rapid implementation, causing no disruption to daily business practices.
Stromasys' new enterprise-class Alpha products replace the original AlphaServer DS10/20, ES40, and GS80/160 EV6-based hardware systems with a virtual platform that operates at the same computational performance, with much faster I/O subsystems, when installed on modern, industry-standard servers. As with Stromasys' other virtualization software products, the original operating system, software, and applications continue to run unchanged after copying them to the virtual platform. HP recognizes CHARON as a genuine replacement solution, and provides transfer licenses for the OpenVMS or Tru64 operating system, layered software, and applications running in the appropriate CHARON environment.
Stromasys SA is a privately held company headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, serving thousands of users in more than 50 countries. Stromasys SA was established in 1998 as part of a management buyout of DEC's (Digital Equipment Corporation) European Migration and Porting Centre following the HP/Compaq merger. The vast experience gained from years of large-scale migration projects, system-level VMS engineering projects, and development of Binary translators eventually led to the development of the CHARON-VAX and CHARON-AXP products. For more information, please visit www.stromasys.com Public OpenVMS sessions at TNMoC, Bletchley Park, UK - 15th and 22nd May 2009
