INTRODUCTION

It has been a while since the last newsletter but here it
is. Hopefully it is worth waiting for.

Looking at the items it seems a lot has happened in in
June and July. Despite the doom and gloom expressed in
some forums work continues on the next version of OpenVMS,
V8.4, which will contain some very useful new features and
be available for the HP Integrity and Alpha server
platforms.

I'm always interested in more OpenVMS news and your
feedback.

OPENVMS AMBASSADOR SPIRIT AWARD 2009

The VMS Ambassador Spirit Award is a yearly award for the
person who shows the most spirit, passion, integrity and
excitement about OpenVMS.

This very special award was originally known as the John
Wisnieski <http://wiz.openvms.org/> award but was renamed
in 2008 to reflect a wider debt to other VMS Ambassadors
now gone.

This years award goes to THE VMS Ambassador - Sue
Skonetski

IT'S TIME FOR SUE SKONETSKI TO SAY SAYONARA

My Dear Friends,

My name is Sue Skonetski and I have the best job in the
world.

I thought that since I usually start out many of my
introductions with that it’s only fair that I should end
with it.

Friday this week ends my twenty four year working
relationship with DEC/Compaq/HP. I will be shutting down
my systems Friday morning.

I have been trying for days to do this note. The previous
9 years pale compared with the last 15 in the VMS group.
And they were full of meaningful networking projects like
the Networks road show and amazing wonderful people.

For many years we have worked closely together. We have
celebrated our victories and mourned our losses. It has
been a long road with many wonderful times, I think about
getting together at DECUS (Connect HPTF) and talking until
all hours of the night (morning) with VMS folks from all
over the country. And for the last 6 years doing the same
at the boot camp people with people from all over the
world. Sometimes we would lift a pint, always we would
solve problems and we always became a close knit group.
Who can forget the fun parties? The huge 25th anniversary
cake at Connect when Richey Lary was going to dive off a
ladder into it. Or more recently when we did VMS Bedtime
stories at the Boot camp. Everybody had so many stories
they were lined up to the door. And then, of course, the
big gong. We are so fortunate to have so much.

There have been many twists, turns and bumps. It has never
been boring. You are all the best part of my job. Thank
you so very much, I love what I do (did) because not only
did I work with the best customers in the world, but the
best colleagues as well.

The VMS Engineering Group has been an outstanding set of
engineers to work with. Their commitment to quality has
always been inherent in all the work they do. You
experience this daily through both their code and their
customer support. I am honored and proud to have been part
of this amazing team for the last fifteen years.

VMS Customers, because of you all of us have a job we
love. It is so much more than a vendor relationship, you
have helped make VMS what it is today, a family. Your
feedback, your concern, your willingness to fight your
management and ours has kept us together. Please keep
doing this, it’s really worth the fight. You have the
Connect our User group and they want to fight for you,
contact Nina Buik the president or any board member give
them a reason. This is how we got the hobby license.
Please also remember our very cool partners that have
stood by our side from the beginning. Tdi (consoleworks)
the first partner to port to Integrity, or Stromasys (SRI)
that has worked with emulation helping our customers, what
about Oracle Rdb with their amazing talented engineering
group, Nemonix if it was a DEC product any era they can
get it for you. How about this, remember Process Software,
always at DECUS (HPTF) always involved in anything to do
with helping the customers. Recently I have been working
with SCI based in Nashua Brad McCusker is there and of
course Maklee where Guy Peleg and CMOS what ever they set
their mind to will be excellent quality. Last Thursday I
spoke to Peter Marquez at e-Cube with an amazing product
on VMS called an Eclipse plug in. Why all this about
partners? Because they are part of your team to help you
as well and they have things to help, you just need to
know.

Ambassadors, I am having a hard time with this. I remember
when there were only 83 Ambassadors 14 years ago. Now
there are over 150. You really are the “Best of the Best”
as your jackets say. Please remember, the Gryphon. It is
the protector of the treasure of kings. Because VMS is the
treasure, and you are the protectors. Please keep your
passion, it’s always been a personal thing it was never
corporate. I have been so happy to work for and with you.
Thank you. GBH.

It is very important for you to continue to get VMS
communications. If you have not signed up yet please send
your contact details to openvms.programs@hp.com this will
ensure you that Sujatha Ramani my replacement will
continue to send you email in the future.

What’s next for me? I will be looking for a employment, so
if you have an idea for me, please let me know.

If you would like to offer a recommendation on Linked In I
would greatly appreciate it.

The Japanese bid their friends “Sayonara”, which means
“Until we meet again”. So this is what I will say to you
all. I cannot think of this as the end, neither can I say
a thorough goodbye. Not to you my dear friends.

I would like to stay in touch with as many of you as
possible. Below you will find my contact information.
Please do not be stranger. I will always be happy to hear
from you

Sue at openvms org

I also have a face book account if you care to add me to
your list of friends.

With respect, love and warm wishes and many tears

MDS600 FOR INTEGRITY C-CLASS BLADES

The HP StorageWorks 600 Modular Disk System(MDS600) is
supported on OpenVMS 8.3-1H1 on HP BladeSystems. The
MDS600 is used along with the HP StorageWorks 3Gb BL SAS
switch and the P700m Smart Array Controller for a zoned
SAS storage solution. This MDS600 SAS solution provides
good performance of 3Gb/s and is ideal for customers who
previously had to resort to complex and expensive SANs for
such performance.

The MDS enclosure allows you to easily provision drives
that appear as local storage for each blade server by a
process known as ‘zoning’. Up to six MDS600 storage
devices can be supported off a single BladeSystem
enclosure for up to 420 TB of capacity.

This MDS 600 SAS solution with zoning has therefore the
following advantages:

# Good performance at low latency without the complexity
of a SAN infrastructure

HPTF 2009 - THE OPENVMS STORY

The HPTF was held in the city of Las Vegas in the United
States from 15th to 18th June this year.

The event was opened by Tom Ionatti, followed by a
presentation by Ann Livermore. She gave an over view of
hp’s strategies and directions for the future. She pointed
out that hp held the 1st or 2nd position in all
categories! And HP is the world’s leading data center
company.

Coming to our OpenVMS business specifically, there were
totally 19 sessions for VMS this year, as compared to
13 last year. Six of these sessions, were delivered by the
VMS engineering team and eight sessions were delivered by
partners and consultants of VMS. We had 5 “Meet the
experts” sessions. All of these sessions had very good
attendance and had active participation from audience.

Shobha’s session on OpenVMS Strategy and Roadmap was the
first among VMS sessions. It was very well received and
the audience participation was fantastic. She outlined our
strategy and directions for VMS and explained the roadmap.
The response was so good that Shobha has been requested to
make the same presentation in a webinar for our partners
who missed to attend HPTF! Watch out for announcements on
this shortly. Open source components on VMS was a keenly
discussed topic and generated a lot of interaction between
the audience and the speaker.

The Special Interest Group (SIG) meeting for VMS community
was held next. This is the “Connect” SIG meeting that is
conducted every year for all SIG of all technologies. SIGs
are very important forum to get customer feedback and
helps in advocacy to a great extent. The very involved and
committed VMS SIG members gave a lot of ideas and shared
their thoughts on VMS market and customers. As a SIG
liaison for VMS, I have charted a plan to expand the SIG
membership to include more customers. This will help in
increasing mind share and visibility for VMS to a larger
spread of audience.

Keith Parris, one of our VMS ambassadors, held 2 sessions,
Using Shadow sets With More Than Three Members and OpenVMS
Disaster Tolerance Update. Both these sessions were well
attended and had wide appreciation from audience. Keith
updated the audience on the trends that he was seeing with
customers’ DR requirements. A shadow set with more than 3
members is a feature that is eagerly anticipated by
customers. He presented many success and a few limitations
of DR setups. This was a very well received session.

K E Prashanth started day 2 with a great presentation on
OpenVMS on Integrity c-class Blades. Customers were
planning for blades as a part of their It strategy. There
were lots of interest in technologies like Virtual connect
and Virtual media. OpenVMS system management tools were
expected to work on par with other platforms. This session
gave a good insight of what customers expect and value the
most from OpenVMS. There were suggestions on fixing
alignment faults that are present in VMS, proactively. It
was attended by over 30 people and he got excellent
feedback on his content delivery and flair.

Nilakantan Mahadevan did a great presentation on OpenVMS
Clusters over TCP/IP and he is gaining popularity among
VMS customers as an able presenter and speaker. Way to go
Nil! Customers were happy about getting this feature into
VMS. Many of them were looking forward to using it in
their environments. They were looking out for security
considerations that we have planned for the future
releases. In the “meet the expert” session, customers
requested for features like ease of configuration,
manageability and QOS tagging in our future releases. IPv6
is not planned for initial release and this seems ok for
now, but going forward, customer expects this to be in the
roadmap beyond 8.4. The technology content and demo was
very well appreciated.

Shyam Sankar Gopalakrishnan’s superb presentation on
OpenVMS as a Guest in an HP Virtual Machine Environment
was the last one before the gala closing ceremony. Against
all odds, there were over 40 people for this session that
turned out to be the most interactive. The audience
engaged in discussions by sharing their experience on how
one can deploy OpenVMS guest in their environment and also
provided inputs on the migrating from physical to virtual
environments. In the “Meet the expert” session, customer
wanted additional features on shared storage functionality
in OpenVMS guest clusters. His presentation was the most
interactive with the audience!

The new addition to this year’s HPTF was “Meet the expert”
sessions. The speaker who is an expert in the topic that
he presented get 1-1 time with a few customers who want to
have their specific queries answered. This was a welcome
idea and it helped us understand customer expectations
from hp platforms and technology in the future. There were
a lot of queries on compliance issues like SOX and
security audits in their environments. The entire
engineering team was present for this session with
customers.

All the above presentations will be posted in galaxy in a
few days from now. The presentations made by our partners
and consultant will be available by July 10th in the
portal. I will give you a heads up once it is posted.

The engineering and the management team spent considerable
time with OpenVMS customer and partners on a 1-1 basis to
gain insights from them on their business and markets they
operated in.

To give you a snapshot of the opening key notes by Ann
Livermore please read on. She delved deeper into the
following focus areas for hp:

    1. Datacenter transformation,
    2. Information explosion and
    3. Everything as a service.

While managing data centers, she emphasized that we focus
on efficiency, through automation, virtualization and
drive solutions on business continuity and high
availability. We are driving solutions around performance
optimized Data Centers. We all know and agree that there
is information explosion around us which needs governance,
services and infrastructure to manage the information
explosion. This crystallizes to our new mantra “Everything
as a service”. That includes Adaptive infrastructure,
Technology enablers, IT Applications, Business Services.

She pointed that we were the largest server vendors
shipping a server every second! Boy! Aren’t we proud of
the company that we are all part of!

Ann’s speech was followed by a presentation by Paul Miller
on marketing strategies.

A scintillating presentation by Prith Banerjee head of hp
labs captivated the audience next. He described the
projects that hp was working on for the future that would
place hp as a technology leader, thought leader and
impacting and improving the lives of people.

Prith highlighted the global footprint of HP labs by
saying that hp labs are spread all over the world and that
our R&D investments and projects are focused on driving
inventions that will differentiate hp well in the market
place of the future. Some of the highlights of his
presentation were hp’s R & D advancements in photonic
interconnects, plastic reflective displays, in color.
There were very well received by the audience who were
enthralled with this presentation.

The top priorities that he identified are: -

    1. Digital Commercial Print
    2. Intelligent transformation
    3. Immersive interaction
    4. Information Management
    5. Cloud
    6. Analytics
    7. Sustainability

For in-depth details on each of the above, recommend that
you the see HP Technology Forum & Expo 2009.

In effect the HPTF provided a good opportunity for the
OpenVMS engineering and management team to meet and
understand customers, partners, ambassadors consultants
and evangelists who are a significant part of the eco
system.

OPENVMS AT THE 2009 HPTF BY CAMIEL VANDERHOEVEN

This year, I attended the HP Tech Forum and Expo to
deliver a presentation on behalf of Migration Specialties
regarding VAX and Alpha hardware replacement options
(session 2021).

The sessions I attended were mainly centred on OpenVMS and
Integrity. It was by no means equal to the boot camp, but
the overall quality of the sessions was very good. What
was new this year was that the VMS presentations by HP
employees were all done by the engineers out of Bangalore,
with the exception of Keith Parris. As such, this was a
good opportunity to get a feel for what drives the VMS
engineering team in Bangalore, and I was pleasantly
surprised.

I am aware that there is a lot of unrest about the recent
move of much of the remainder of VMS engineering and
management to India, and I had my doubts about this
myself. The Indian engineers have managed to allay my
doubts and convince me that they are as passionate about
VMS as we are. Moreover, and this is something that I
believe HP management hasn't managed to get across
properly, many of the VMS engineers in India are very
experienced and have been involved with VMS since the
Digital days.

During the sessions they presented, as well as in private
meetings I had with them, the Indian engineers came across
as being very eager to make improvements to VMS, and to
keep delivering the consistent level of quality that we
are all used to. They were very approachable, and actively
solicited input from the attendees as to what improvements
customers would like to see in the areas they talked about
in their sessions.

One of the interesting points that came up during the SIG
meeting was the question of whether or not to release
version 8.4 earlier than the delayed release of the new
Tukwila processors and do a separate hardware release for
Tukwila later (an 8.4-1H1). HP was still debating this
issue internally, and would like to know how the VMS user
community felt about this idea. A show of hands made clear
that an overwhelming majority was in favor of separating
the 8.4 software improvements (clusters over IP and
six-member shadow sets among other things) from the
Tukwila hardware support.

Another interesting discussion during the SIG meeting was
about the possibility of resuming the tradition of the VMS
boot camps. The current idea seems to be that the Connect
user organization would be the organizer of these events
(much like the old DECUS symposia), but that its format
would remain unchanged, with a lot of contributions from
VMS engineering and partners, as well as fun evenings like
the VMS Magic evenings and the awards dinner. The idea is
that these events should take place in New England, where
VMS's roots lie.

Indications are the advocacy web site for OpenVMS will
return. The web site allows the VMS community to request
VMS features and vote on the desirability of requested
features.

A very pleasant surprise was the presence of Sue
Skonetski, and her daughter Amanda. Although no longer
employed by HP, Sue was at the Tech Forum on behalf of two
HP partners: e-Cube Systems (software development tools,
also on VMS) and Trilogy Solutions (hardware leasing).
Sue's name has become practically synonymous with VMS and
it wouldn't have been the same without her. E-Cube
organized a raffle with VMS-related items to be won and
Trilogy sponsored a party that was pretty much a gathering
of VMS-minded people. Sue was also active during the SIG
meeting, reminding people to use the microphone, please.

Unfortunately, VMS's visibility during the general portion
of the event was pretty low. VMS was not mentioned in any
of the general sessions' slides, and when it was mentioned
by Ann Livermore during the opening session - "and for
those of you still running OpenVMS" - it could have been
done a lot better. Also, there was no VMS visibility in
the HP booth in the expo hall. The VMS management team
agreed that this needs to be improved.

In all, even though this was not purely a VMS-event, and
though I would have liked to see more VMS-related
sessions, I feel that attending the forum was worth the
time and money spent. Despite VMS's low visibility in the
HP booth, the VMS stealth marketing performed by partners
and clients was effective enough that I didn't encounter
anyone who hadn't heard of VMS or didn't know what it was,
with the exception of someone in the McAfee booth. When I
told her I didn't need their product, because there had
never been a virus for the VMS operating system, she told
me to wait until it had been around a bit longer. And that
is exactly what I intend to do. I will hang in there, and
wait until VMS has been around a lot longer than it has
been already.

ECUBE ADDS 3GLS TO ECLIPSE FOR NXTWARE REMOTE

eCube Systems have announced the availability of new
language support for NXTware Remote, its Eclipse-based
integrated development environment (IDE) for remote
systems development. Enterprise IT organizations doing
strategic development in COBOL, FORTRAN, C, BASIC, and
PASCAL can now leverage the Eclipse IDE from Windows or
LINUX to develop and debug code remotely on HP OpenVMS
servers.

With enhanced language support, NXTware Remote opens the
door to greater efficiency and productivity. Now,
developers can be more productive programming in the
languages they know, be it Java or older 3GLs like COBOL
or FORTRAN. The capabilities of NXTware Remote make it

THE OPENVMS CONSULTANT: DCL COMPUTED GOTO

Multiple choice transfers of control are one of the most
time-honored facilities in programming languages, be they
conventional or scripting, interpreted or compiled,
assembler or very high level. It is often mistakenly
believed that indirection is needed for implementation,
but this is not the case. Perfectly serviceable multi-way
branches can be implemented without indirection. All that
is necessary is some method of re-computing the location
of the next instruction (or line in a scripting language)
to be executed.

The syntax of multi-way transfers of control depend on the
individual syntax of the underlying programming language,
and may take several forms, including:

     * Computed GOTO (FORTRAN)
     * switch/case (C/C++/JAVA)
     * GOTO DEPENDING ON (COBOL)
     * ON GOTO (BASIC)
     * Branch/Jump Tables (assembler)

Beyond the most basic ability to compute the next
statement to be executed, the most important requirement
in implementing a multi-way branch is ensuring that the
branch value is within the appropriate range. Indeed, the
VAX architecture contains the CASE machine instruction to
implement bounds checking and transfer of control via an
inline table of offsets.

At its most basic, a multi-way transfer of control depends
on an integer index. This is the most basic form, and it
is shared by most assembler and third generation
languages. C/C++/JAVA enums are integers, for most intents
and purposes. DCL, PERL, EnScript® and other interpreted
scripting languages often extend this concept to strings.
This extension transforms the range check from an integer
bounds check to a check based on the presence of an index
string value within an enumeration of potential values.
This check can be most simply implemented by using a
string index function. In DCL the string index operation
is provided by the F$LOCATE lexical function.

However, some caution is needed when using the F$LOCATE
function, or for that matter, any index function to locate
a substring within the context of a larger string.
Consider an index string that can contain the values
“THEE”, and “EEM”. Admittedly, this selection of values
has more than a small potential for confusion, but it is a
useful example.

Simply checking that the index string is contained within
a list of possible strings is insufficient (e.g., the
string “THE” is not a valid index, yet is within the valid
index string “THEE”). The solution is to ensure that the
string containing the valid values starts and ends with
the delimiter character. This technique was discussed in a
previous column entitled: “Pitfalls of F$LOCATE and other
functions”.

Using the extra delimiters, the validation code is
simplicity itself, to wit (INDEX_VALUE contains the index
string):

$ VALID_INDICES = “/ONE/TWO/THREE/FOUR/”
$ IF F$LOCATE(“/”+indexvalue+”/”, VALID_INDICES) -
            .EQ. F$LENGTH(VALID_INDICES) THEN {error
processing}

Once the string index has been validated, the actual
transfer of control consists of combining a simple GOTO
statement with symbolic substitution, to wit:
$ GOTO TARGET_’INDEXVALUE’
$ TARGET_ONE:
$ …
$ GOTO EXITTARGET
$ TARGET_TWO:
$ …
$ GOTO EXITTARGET
$ TARGET_THREE:
$ …
$ GOTO EXITTARGET
$ TARGET_THREE:
$ …
$ GOTO EXITTARGET
$ TARGET_FOUR:
$ …
$ EXITTARGET:
$ …

This approach is far safer than attempting to nest
IF-THEN-ELSE conditionals. The option is processed
directly. If an invalid index is presented, it is detected
immediately and dealt with. Adding a new possibility is
simply a matter of adding the new index possibility to
VALID_STRING and adding the appropriate processing code.

A segment of DCL implementing and demonstrating the above
technique can be found on my www site under "DCL GOTO"
under the Demonstrations heading.

Reader questions about using DCL, or other questions
relating to OpenVMS should be addressed to the

STROMASYS DELIVERS CROSS-PLATFORM VIRTUALIZATION SOFTWARE
IN COLLABORATION WITH HP

Stromasys, Inc., a leader in cross-platform virtualization
software, announced that CHARON virtualization products
will be delivered directly to HP customers who are looking
to modernize legacy VAX and Alpha systems. Customers in
the United States and Canada will be able to take
advantage of price and performance enhancements available
through HP Integrity and ProLiant servers.

Stromasys' CHARON virtualization products for VAX and
Alpha provide an ideal solution for owners of VAX and
Alpha systems, allowing them to take advantage of
performance and total cost of ownership gains associated
with HP Integrity and ProLiant servers, without exposing
them to the risk of changing or losing their legacy VAX
and Alpha applications. Stromasys' unique virtualization
approach is superior to standard emulation because CHARON
products operate seamlessly in a standard Windows or
Integrity environment running on modern, high-performance
HP servers, without modifying or recompiling the original
software or applications.

Encouraged by the overwhelming customer response in
Canada, where this relationship was launched earlier this
year, Stromasys expects the expansion of the collaboration
into the United States to become a rapid success.
According to Zul Abbany, President of Stromasys’ North and
South American operations, "This agreement further
validates Stromasys' achievements in the field of
cross-platform virtualization; we look forward to
providing HP customers with reliable, innovative
virtualization solutions." Dr. Robert Boers, Stromasys
founder and CEO, said, "This milestone demonstrates the
strategic nature of our collaboration with HP, and our
entire team – from sales to development – is excited about
the opportunity to deliver the outstanding value of
virtualization to HP customers." "Customers want to
preserve and extend the life of their existing VAX and
Alpha applications while improving performance, managing
risk and lowering costs," said Ling Chang, technical and
data center services manager, Technology Services –
Americas, HP. "Through our relationship with Stromasys,
our VAX and Alpha customers are now able to successfully
move their existing applications to the HP’s latest server
technologies."

Stromasys have announced an agreement with HP to provide
HP Transfer Licenses
[http://h71000.www7.hp.com/openvms/sri-charon-vax-emulator.html]
for the OpenVMS and Tru64 operating systems and layered
products directly to resellers and customers.

HP recognizes the CHARON software as a valid VAX or Alpha
replacement solution, and transfer licenses are available
for systems running in the appropriate CHARON-VAX or
CHARON-AXP environment.

Customers now have the option to purchase both the CHARON
software and their HP transfer license at the same time
from Stromasys, further simplifying the move to their new
virtual platform.

About Stromasys - Stromasys is the leading supplier of
cross-platform virtualization solutions, established in
1998. It is a privately held company, headquartered in
Geneva, Switzerland, serving thousands of users throughout
more than 50 countries.

It was formed following a management buyout of Digital
Equipment Corporation's (DEC) European Migration and
Porting Centre during the HP/Compaq merger. The vast
experience gained from years of large-scale migration and
development of Binary translators eventually led to the
evolution of the CHARON-VAX and CHARON-AXP family of
products, which have made Stromasys the success it is
today.

More information about Stromasys is available at
